Making carbonated water at home?

I've been wasting a lot of club soda by using half a can in a cocktail and then throwing out the rest. It's also a pain to go buy more club soda every few weeks.I've started looking at making carbonated water at home. I don't want a soda stream, because I think it's overpriced.
