Failed cocktail: the tongue-number
The idea: Mix sambuca and Cointreau, complementing the tartness of orange with an aftertaste of anise. The recipe: 1-1/2 oz. vodka, 1/2 oz. Cointreau, 1/4 oz. sambuca. Stir with cracked ice.The results:Appearance: Clear. Unremarkable. Could have garnished with an orange twist, but it wouldn't have saved the drink.Taste: Overwhelmed by sambuca. Confuses you into thinking ethanol tastes like licorice and vice-versa. Numbs your tongue after a few sips with no pleasant side effects. Is there even Cointreau in this thing?Other comments: My stomach feels like an oil well. A bubbling, burning well of licorice tar.I guess you can't win 'em all.
